In the UK there seems to be some significant packet loss at telecityredbus at the moment. This is affecting connectivity to some servers for certain people. This fault is outside of our network, but we are monitoring the issue and will update this notice once the problem seems to be resolved.

An update from the colo

We have determined that the repairs for the ATS will take more time than anticipated, so we are putting into service a backup ATS that we have on-site. We are working with our power team to safely bring the replacement ATS into operation. We will update you as soon as we have an estimated time that the replacement ATS will be online. Later, once we have repaired the main ATS, we will schedule an update window to transition from the temporary power solution. We will provide advance notice and timelines to minimize any disruption to your business.

CloudFloor clients should be generally unaffected by this issue.

One our data centres in Dallas is experiencing a power issue. This has affected some of our Dallas nodes. This is the information we have received from the data centre. �We have an issue with one phase of our power plant. We have a vendor in route now to deal with this issue. We will provide more information as soon as we are able to.� This is obviously affecting more than just our colo equipment. Normal dns resolution will happen unaffected, but we may currently experience a delay in replication of changes.

IP address migration

Over the next few days Microtech will be migrating some of it's services to new IP addresses. This should be completely non service affecting. As is the case with any system that has run for in excess of 10 years and is used by 10's of thousands of users, some users will inevitably have hard coded some of our IP addresses into their firewalls, software, etc. We of course recommend you only ever point to our host names as set in dns so that IP address changes do not affect you.

If you do experience any issues with any of your mail, software, or other systems over the next few days, please do check to see that you have not hard coded any IP address into your system. Check that the host name you should be connecting to has not changed it's IP since you set itbeforecontacting support.

Some of the services that are being migrated include domain forwarding, email, 1 dns server, 1 netmon probe, secondary dns zone transfer retrieval, and other minor systems. All IP addresses starting in 213 will eventually be removed from service. All new IP's will run in tandem with the old IP's up until this time.

Unless you are contacted by our support team, there should be nothing you need to do as Microtech will completely handle all changes from our side without interruption to service. If you have reference to our 213 IP addresses directly in third party systems outside of our control, you will need to make changes in order to ensure you do not experience issues.

Please contact support via the support centre or email if you have any queries regarding these changes.

A mail authentication problem between servers has today resulted in some email arriving at one of our mail receivers being rejected. This issue has now been resolved and we are working to ensure this cannot happen again. If you did get a 'we do not relay' message at any point today, please resend your message. Only 1 of the front ends was affected by this issue so only a limited amount of mail was affected. We sincerely apologise for this issue. Measures are being put in place now to prevent this ever occuring again.

Wednesday 03/16/2011 between 0:30am and 6:00am CET (UTC/GMT +1 hour)

Each maintenance will be carried out in two stages.

The first stage, until about 2am CET (UTC/GMT +1 hour), involves shutting down the affected infrastructure.
The redundancy in our infractructure will maintain normal service during this time.
The switchover itself will possibly result in a short loss of connection
and fluctuations in the latency during the time up to approximately 2am

The second stage involves the restarting of the shut-down components.
We are planning this for the time between 4:30am and 6am CET, it is also
likely that the service may be interrupted briefly and that ping times will fluctuate.

The reason for the work is a comprehensive firmware update to our
routers and a further expansion of our network resources to accommodate
our growing needs. This work must be carried out seperately for the
redundant systems which is why we need to carry out maintenance on two nights.

We have reduced the disruption to a minimum by preparing carefully and
with the support, also during the maintenance itself, of the manufacturer.

We have just experienced a raid controller failure on a san serving 2 of our mail servers. This has already been resolved but resulted in the 2 affected mail servers being shutdown unexpectedly. All servers are now back in operation and are operating normally.

A more detailed explaination for the issue below.

Microtech maintains dedicated mail forwarding servers. These servers only forward email for users that do not have hosted email with us. Our hosted email servers use different recieving servers with different spam protection etc. A very small numbher of domains have their hosted email with is but had their MX records pointed to the mail forwarding servers, probably due to having used mail forwarding in the past. This has meant that the mx records point to the mail forwarding server first, then to the hosted email server. This will mostly work, but the mail loops through a couple servers first. We regularly update the mail forwarding server with a list of domains it should accept mail for. There is a slight window where hosted mail domains are not on this box (maybe 20 minutes) occasionally. This is not an issue as hosted mail isn't supposed to use these servers. What has happened is that mail recieved during that period has bounced for people who have hosted mail pointed to the mail forwarding server.

As mentioned, a workaround has been put in place and we'll be reviewing the few domains we have seen the issue affect.

An issue has occured where some hosted email boxes that had their email configured to go to the mail forwarding servers rather than the hosted mail servers have had some email bounced between 11:45 and 12:05. The affected emails are likely very few, however if you did experience any complaints of email sent to you bouncing with a 'we do not relay' message', please contact us so we can advise you on your mail configuration further.

A workaround has been put in place to prevent this happening in future.

This Sunday the 11th, begining at 8am, essential work will be carried out on a local electricity substation. This work is expected to take an extended period of time. In the early hours of this morning, one of our SAN's suffered a disk controller failure. Due to the nature of the failure and the fact that the machine continued to actually be responsive even though it could not serve data, the backup san did not automatically take over as it should have until we restarted systems manually at around 7am.

All systems are now back to normal, however some services where affected by the outage. These are mailscan, web forwarding, exchange1, and some back office servers. Some delay to delivering email will have been experienced the last few hours via certain mail services. In addition, a very small amount of emails (around 300) that were in the process of being received at the time the storage failed were not written to disk and would have been returned as undeliverable to the sender. If you experienced this issue, please resend your email.

We sincerely apologise for this outage and will take steps to try and ensure similar senarios result in a proper failover of services in the future.

Hotmail delivery issues.

Many users are reporting hotmail rejecting legitimate email as spam again. There is regrettably nothing we can do about this as we have no control over what hotmail consider spam and what content they consider legitimate. We are seeing a repeat of several months ago where hotmail are rejecting considerable numbers of perfectly legitimate email messages with the 'rejected by Windows Live Hotmail for policy reasons' error. Advice from hotmail is limited, but does include getting the recipient to add the senders email address to their hotmail 'safe senders' list.

If you continue to experience issues, we ask that you get the recipient to log a call with hotmail/livemail themselves, as there is nothing we can do from this end.

According to Hotmail, their system is unable to determine unathorised data mining from geniune servers and they are unable to make exceptions to this. This problem comes about from the fact we try to prevent email abuse and spam from addresses @hotmail.com being sent to our servers. We use the same methods as some various other software to verify email addresses if needed, but hotmail seems to have incorrectly clasified this as a data mining attempt. As a result, in order to prevent this happening again we will be forced to reject email that is address as from @hotmail.com that does not match it's published SPF. This is a move we have resisted in the past as it causes some legitimate email from people who send not via hotmail servers, but with the hotmail address to get their email bounced. Hotmail have told us they will lift the block at 8:08 today (very specific!)

UPGRADES TO HOSTED EMAIL SERVICES

Microtech is currently making some upgrades to it's hosting infrastructure. As a result the email store for the standard hosted POP/IMAP services will be taken off-line for approximately 40 minutes early this Saturday morning, around 7am. This will result in POP and IMAP for the standard hosted email service not being available during that time. This does not affect zimbra, mailscan, backup email or any other email service. No email will be lost during this time. Users may simply be unable to retrieve new emails.

Further to the power issue yesterday.

Part of our power protection equipment died overnight and damaged one of the mail scanning nodes. This server was replaced by 7am, but later that day, another node failed on the same circuit preventing user access to the spam queues, but not affecting email delivery. These have both now been replaced. There were some emails deferred yesterday after the equipment was replaced due to a corrupt database table. These were deferred, not rejected. This was detected later in the day only after some emails were reported not arriving (most were) and all problems are fully resolved as of 10pm last night. No mail was lost. The final 3rd server in that rack has also now had to be replaced, which we are working on now. This log will be updated once this has been done.

We have noticed that some domains hosted on our dns services do not use all the available servers, thus do not benifit fully from the distributed nature of the dns servers. For any domain hosted here you should be using 4 name servers. If your domain is registered with us and is hosted on our dns servers but uses out of date or an incomplete set of name servers, we will automatically update this for you today. If your name is not registered with us and you are not using the full 4 name servers or use the old .gg names for 2 of them, please contact us and we will provide the information for you to update them.

Things should pretty much be back to normal now. Due to dns caching at some ISP's it may take a little while for your ISP to start resolving dns from some of our servers, but services are up and running again on alternate servers and dns is resolving properly from most locations.
We appreciate some of the kind comments and support we received today. We realise that outages like this are very serious and can cause some people considerable issues (us included!). We have never experienced any attack like this in more than 10 years. We as yet do not know if the attack was targeted at a client using our dns servers or directly at us. We will be posting more details once an investigation has been made.

A failover of the data store on the Hosted POP/IMAP service has caused some copies of outlook to forget their place if you leave mail on our servers without deleting it after collection (which is what we recommend). This has resulted in some users recieving email that they had already received because the mail client does not know it has already downloaded it. This has caused an additional load on these particular servers which has caused access to be slower than usual whilst the mail clients 'catch up'. This should resolve itself shortly and no action is required on your part.

NETMON SERVICE: In order to improve the efficientcy of the testing process, tests which have been responding as bad for 2 weeks or more will be paused. As non-responding tests take far longer than responding tests to make, this will improve testing times. Should you wish to return the test to active status you only need to unpause the test.

A clients mail server is causing an accidental DOS attack on our hosted SMTP server. This only affects smtp.mtgsy.net and POP clients. This problem should be resolved in the next few minutes.

A comms failure at one of our upstream providers is preventing access to one of the hosted email servers providing POP email. The provider has been made aware of this and is working to rectify the fault now.

POP3 login times to pop.mtgsy.net seem to be a little extended today, perhaps due to the issue with the database we experienced last night. It is being looked into now. POP3 is working but there is occasionally a delay in authenticating.

A fault with our database caused problems with the website tonight. This issue could have been resolved quickly with the loss of some mail log data, or left to recover fully. We chose to let the db recover in order to fully keep all mail stats intact. This resulted in the website being unavailable for longer than we would have liked but it was in a period were the site is least used.

A faulty switch has caused low mail thoughput on our mail queue processor overnight. As a result, some mail has been delayed. The switch has been reset and normall queue processing has begun. An update will be posted here as soon as the queues are full clear and no more outstanding mail is left.

Hosted email services
Due to the mail server moves yesterday, some mails in the outgoing email queue on the hosted email service only were not delivered. These have all been delivered as of 11am this morning. This was due to the relay host being changed. This only affects hosted pop / imap accounts and not any other service including mailscan and backupmx services. There is currently no known mail delay on any of the mail services.
